Levulan

Do you have skin that's less-than-perfect? Levulan® may be the solution you've been seeking. It is now becoming the treatment of choice for those who want skin-saving results without surgery.  Levulan® is an aminolevulinic acid solution (a substance found naturally within your body). First, a clear aminolevulinic solution with a cotton swab applicator to skin that's plagued by either acne, acenic scarring or both. Left to absorb into your skin, the solution preps the treated area for the activation portion of the process by increasing the skin's sensitivity to light. Next, the solution is activated by the Blue Light therapy or IPL.  The activated Levulan® begins killing the acne-causing bacteria and destroying any Actinic Keratoses (AK) lesions.

Levulan® is used to treat precancerous skin lesions known as AK lesions and mild to moderate acne, Levulan® can also treat:

• Oily skin and slow the growth of oil-producing sebaceous glands
• Sun damaged skin
• Fine skin lines and creases
• Spot check

While the face is the area most likely to be treated, Levulan® can be used safely on any part of the body such as the back, chest, scalp, and forearms.  Levulan® treatments can make a significant change in tone, texture, and appearance of the skin.  You will see improvements after one treatment but we do recommend a series for more dramatic results.

During the actual treatment, you may experience a tingling sensation at the application site and possibly stinging or prickling feeling of the treated area.  Immediately and in the weeks following the treatment, you may experience increased photosensitivity, changes of skin color, swelling, dry patches of skin that will peel, and sunburn like symptoms. It is important to remain completely out of the sun for 2 days after the treatment.  Mineral sunblock is recommended during any sun exposure.  Everyone reacts differently to Levulan ® so side effects may vary.  All of the side effects are temporary and should improve by the end of the first week post treatment.
